Common Causes & Types of Neuropathy

  • Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy – Nerve damage from long-term high blood sugar, usually starting in the toes and feet.
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome – Compression of a nerve near the ankle, causing tingling, burning, or numbness in the foot.
  • Morton’s Neuroma – Thickening of nerve tissue between the toes, causing burning pain in the ball of the foot.
  • Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy – Nerve damage in the hands and feet caused by certain cancer treatments.
  • Vitamin B12 Deficiency Neuropathy – Nerve damage resulting from low vitamin B12 levels.
  • Alcohol-Related Neuropathy – Nerve damage linked to long-term heavy alcohol use.
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease – An inherited nerve disorder causing weakness, foot deformities, and balance problems.
  • Autonomic Neuropathy – Nerve damage affecting sweating and skin health, leading to dry, cracked feet.

Diabetic Neuropathy

The most common form, causing numbness, burning, and loss of protective sensation in the feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Pressure on the tibial nerve at the ankle that sends tingling or burning pain into the sole.

Morton's Neuroma

A pinched nerve between the toes that feels like standing on a pebble or folded sock.

Foot Drop

Weakness in the muscles that lift the foot, causing dragging toes and frequent tripping.

Key Symptoms — When to Seek Help?

  • Tingling, “pins and needles,” or crawling sensations in the feet.

  • Burning pain, often worse at night.

  • Numbness or reduced ability to feel touch, pressure, or temperature.

  • Sharp, stabbing, or electric-shock-like pain.

  • Extreme sensitivity, where even a bedsheet feels painful.

  • Muscle weakness, loss of balance, or frequent tripping.

  • Unnoticed cuts, blisters, or sores on the feet.

  • Sudden, rapidly spreading numbness or weakness (seek urgent care).

⚠️ Warning: Loss of sensation can hide injuries and lead to ulcers or infection. Consult a specialist if you experience persistent numbness or tingling.
