Common Foot & Ankle Surgeries

  • Flexible Flat Foot – The arch appears when sitting or on tiptoe but disappears when standing.
  • Rigid Flat Foot – The arch is absent at all times and the foot has limited movement.
  • Pediatric Flat Foot – Common in young children as the arch is still developing.
  • Adult-Acquired Flatfoot – Arch collapse in adulthood, often due to posterior tibial tendon dysfunction.
  • Tarsal Coalition – An abnormal connection between foot bones that causes a stiff, flat foot.
  • Overpronation – Excessive inward rolling of the foot while walking or running.
  • Plantar Fasciitis – Heel and arch pain that commonly develops with flat feet.
  • Related Joint Strain – Ankle, knee, hip, and lower back pain caused by poor foot alignment.

Flexible Flat Foot

The most common type, where the arch is visible when the foot is off the ground.

Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction

Weakening of the main tendon supporting the arch, causing progressive flattening in adults.

Overpronation

The ankle rolls inward with each step, placing extra stress on the arch and inner ankle.

Tarsal Coalition

A condition present from birth in which foot bones are joined, limiting movement and causing pain.

Key Symptoms — When to Seek Help?

  • Pain or aching in the arch or heel, especially after standing or activity.

  • Feet that roll inward or ankles that lean toward each other.

  • Swelling along the inside of the ankle.

  • Tired, heavy feet after short periods of walking or standing.

  • Uneven shoe wear, especially on the inner edges.

  • Knee, hip, or lower back pain linked to foot posture.

  • Difficulty standing on tiptoe or a foot that feels stiff.

  • Sudden arch collapse or severe pain in the inner ankle (seek prompt medical care).

⚠️ Warning: Flat feet in children are often normal, but persistent pain, stiffness, or a sudden change in arch shape needs evaluation. Consult a specialist if pain interferes with daily activities.
